Onika Tonya Maraj "Nicki Minaj" was born December 8, 1984. She lived in Trinidad with her grandmother until she was 5 when she moved to Queens, New York. Nicki states that her father was a drug abuser, alcoholic, and he tried murdering her mother by lighting the house on fire. To escape her family problems she created alter egos for herself. She created new people in her mind and lived through them. Her newest character is Roman, who "appeared" in her song "Roman's Revenge".
She graduated LaGuardia High School which specialized in music and peforming arts. She was in the drama program. She had a job at Red Lobster in Bronx.
In the beginning of her career she made some mixtapes and appeared on the cover of XXL. She won the Female Artist of the Year Award at Underground Music Awards in 2008. She was the first woman who had a solo song that topped the charts since 2002. She was also the first female rapper to have 7 songs on the charts. Her influences for music were Lil Wayne, Lauryn Hill, and Lil' Kim.
