Changing Education Paradigms

I was very impressed with this video.  The speaker had many important things mentioned that were true.  I believe that they should be looked upon and maybe have some of his words be put into actions.  I was impressed with how the video was put together using drawings because some people become more fascinated when they have something to look at.  I think the video must have took the artist a lot of time and it was very detailed.
I agree that children shouldn't be put into school by age.  Everyone has different learning levels and they go at different paces.  Some schools like Sudbury Valley don't have grades, which is what I like about the school.  I agree that children's thinking strategies decline for the worse because it is true that we are taught to learn things no other way then what is taught.
I disagree that children are put on medicines for ADHD just so that children can pay attention in school.  I don't believe that ADHD isn't common in the west because that disorder could happen anywhere.
It surprised me to think that someone thought about all the problems with the school systems and it's mostly true.  That speaker was a pure genius.

  1. Nikki,

I also agree that it doesn't make sense to put students in classes based on their age. How can we redesign school to do things differently? Would all students come into formal schooling in Kindergarten and some would move faster or would there be a readiness test of some sort?

I am interested in hearing more about the Sudbury Valley School.

  2. If I were able to control how school systems were set up, I would have children start school at kindergarten but have specialists test them on how much they know. From there, they would be divided amongst what their score was and be taught that way because some kindergarteners might have the learning ability of a first grader.

In Sudbury Valley, according to one student and his guardian, the school is set up for people ranging in ages of 6-20. In order to graduate you must complete a thesis and stand in front of officials and people of their age group to see if the student is ready to move on into the real world. If accepted they will receive a diploma, if not they will have to continue school and keep trying until they graduate. Some students may consider getting a GED as it looks better on resumes for jobs and colleges.
